20/10/2007 Delta Packaging breaks its own speed records with Leary !

Delta print & packaging, the Belfast based folding carton producer recently installed it's third high-speed gluing system from Leary. The system replaces the standard unit supplied with the Bobst Alpina gluer. The company required a minimum running speed of 145,000 cartons per hour and following installation achieved average speeds of over 170,000 cartons per hour.
The company produces packaging for one of the world's largest convenience food retailers, manufacturing over 2.5 million fries scoops every 24 hours. It was in this area of production that Delta sought to increase productivity by moving the majority of this work onto their Bobst Alpina gluer. During initial running trials the gluer performed well but it was felt that the standard gluing system would need to be replaced in order to push speeds beyond 320 meters per minute.
Leary were asked to assist in
achieving the required speeds of over 145,000 cartons per hour, Delta are existing users of Leary systems and aware of technology available. A 2-gun high-pressure gluing system with integrated On-Target glue detection was installed and within two days the company achieved running speeds of over 570 meters per minute (170,000 cartons per hour).

20/12/2006 W H Leary celebrate record sales
W H Leary UK, the gluing & quality assurance systems provider is celebrating their best year to date in the UK & Ireland. Sales for 2006 more than doubled that of previous years with major growth in the folded carton quality assurance sector.
The American family run & owned company has significant pedigree with over 75 years experience, holding more than 85% market share in the USA. The company now looks set to further expand its market share in the UK offering bespoke technical quality solutions together with high levels of customer service. “It has been a story of continued success and growth for Leary in the UK,” said Mr. Gary Roberts, UK Sales Manager. “Five years ago nobody had heard of W H Leary – today we are leading the biggest transformation in the QA market for over 20 years. The arrival of Leary in the marketplace has driven down what were artificially inflated prices.” Mr. Roberts continues, “A lack of serious competition in this specialised field presented end users with little or no choice – resulting in what many saw as a monopoly.”
The company entered the UK market in 2000 with the acquisition of Pafra Systems Limited, a well respected gluing systems manufacturer. Since then it has built a reputation for providing medium to high-end integrated gluing & quality assurance solutions.

15/10/2006 Benson Box Group Choose W H Leary for Quality Assurance
Following benchmark trials with all of the leading Quality Assurance Systems providers the Benson Box Group has chosen W H Leary – a world leader in folding carton quality assurance systems – to provide systems within the group.
Benson Box has used automatic quality systems for many years and in line with the company’s commitment to invest in latest technology the time had come to upgrade their existing quality assurance systems. In addition to mixed copy and glue detection functions the group required accurate window patch detection, automatic carton ejection and integrated, networked data collection.
The LS9 integrated gluing & quality assurance system from Leary offered all these functions in one simple package, with vast expandability options the LS9 can grow in the future as required. The integrated Leary data collection suite allowed Benson Box staff to automatically capture and analyse all aspects of production & quality.
In contrast to other systems the Leary LS9 is a complete 24 channel system right from the start. This was seen as a key benefit over other systems as there is no need for additional processing hardware (modules) when new functions are required. An additional channel of control can be added in a few button presses.
Benson Box MD, Mr. Mark Kerridge, notes, “We needed to ensure the system we chose would be easy to use, robust & flexible in order to adapt as our requirements change, with the group now spanning 3 sites in the UK we also noted Leary’s first-rate service and support. Following the trials at our Leicestershire factory, it became clear that the system on offer from W H Leary was the one which best met our criteria.”

15/02/2005 Noteable first for Leary !
A notable first in the UK folding carton industry has been achieved by W H Leary Ltd through the successful installation of a 22 glue valve system on a Bobst Alpina machine to produce highly complex beverage cartons. It is the first time that so many glue valves have been fitted with their own quality detection sensors to ensure that the machine, one of the largest folder-gluers in the world, is able to produce the cartons at a rate of 20,000 per hour and 100 per cent fit-for-use, with a very low wastage level.
These were the specifications that had been laid down for the machine at Riverwood International, the US-based manufacturer of multiple packaging solutions for the food and drinks industry - customers include a host of household brand names - before the deal was signed early last year for the installation of Leary’s LS-9 system on the Bobst Alpina at its UK converting plant in Bristol.
Within a few weeks, after a period of minor adjustments, the machine was achieving the required specifications due to the LS-9’s unique glue application and detection technology. Andy Sims, Leary’s Assistant Business Manager, who was responsible for overseeing the installation, said: “Because of the sheer number of glue valves, it was obviously going to be a highly complex job.. The LS-9 system is unique in that there is no other system that can automatically monitor each glue valve to the level that we can achieve.”
At the heart of the LS9’s success is its On-TargetTM technology, one of a number of Leary patented advances, and formerly known as Pafra Trak. It is not only able to apply and detect glue line runs in one easy-to-use controller at speeds of 10 metres a minute to 600 metres a minute, but automatically adjusts the glue line on the run. Crucially, by automatically preventing the glue line from moving, positional accuracy is assured, substantially reducing machine stoppages and carton spoilages. It was this ability that proved vital to Leary’s success at Riverwood. Added Sims: “At best, our competitors’ systems simply reject the bad cartons until the operator intervenes, which creates high wastage levels. At worst, the cartons aren’t monitored properly, causing bad cartons to be passed to the customer – and the complaints that come with it.”
Riverwood International was already familiar with the costs-saving efficiency of the LS-9. In 2000, it was installed on the first of four of the company’s machines, although the system relatively straightforward with either three or four glue valves.
The performance of the 22 glue valve system on the Bobst Alpina led last December to Riverwood International placing yet another order for the LS-9, this time for a Bobst Domino machine. Of its seven folding carton machines, six now use the system. It has also led in the last year to senior management at the company’s corporate headquarters in Atlanta, Georgia, purchasing no less than 17 additional LS-9 systems for its US market.
And last November, Bobst SA fitted the LS-9, using 22 glue valves, to its largest folder-gluer machine, the Bobst Alpina II GNB, for customer demonstration purposes in the showroom of its corporate headquarters in Lausanne, Switzerland. The LS-9 system features full integration with the Bobst Alpina II CUBE control unit.
