Leary News

Unprecedented gluing speeds achieved.

Leary has achieved another first in high speed carton gluing. The recent installation of their very successful & unique LS9 system at a well-known carton manufacturer has proved a great success.

The folding carton company has a large contract with a major light bulb manufacturer for the supply of its twin-pack light bulb cartons. Using Leary’s patented On-Target™ glue detection technology Leary has helped this customer reach unprecedented speeds, and crucially, maintain 100% quality. At speeds of over 208,000 cph defective cartons are being automatically identified and ejected using Leary’s powerful rotary Max ejector.

The LS9 system is accurately applying four lines of adhesive on each carton, using Leary’s high-pressure glue feed. Monitoring all glue lines independently, any inaccuracies are automatically corrected, “on-the-run” using Leary’s intelligent glue line correction system. At 663 m/min (2,607 f/min) or 57 CARTONS PER SECOND the system allows the folder gluer to reach its absolute maximum speed and performance capability!

Benson Box Group Choose W H Leary for Quality Assurance

Following benchmark trials with all of the leading Quality Assurance Systems providers the Benson Box Group has chosen W H Leary – a world leader in folding carton quality assurance systems – to provide systems within the group.

Benson Box has used automatic quality systems for many years and in line with the company’s commitment to invest in latest technology the time had come to upgrade their existing quality assurance systems. In addition to mixed copy and glue detection functions the group required accurate window patch detection, automatic carton ejection and integrated, networked data collection.

The LS9 integrated gluing & quality assurance system from Leary offered all these functions in one simple package, with vast expandability options the LS9 can grow in the future as required. The integrated Leary data collection suite allowed Benson Box staff to automatically capture and analyse all aspects of production & quality.

In contrast to other systems the Leary LS9 is a complete 24 channel system right from the start. This was seen as a key benefit over other systems as there is no need for additional processing hardware (modules) when new functions are required. An additional channel of control can be added in a few button presses.

Benson Box MD, Mr. Mark Kerridge, notes, “We needed to ensure the system we chose would be easy to use, robust & flexible in order to adapt as our requirements change, with the group now spanning 3 sites in the UK we also noted Leary’s first-rate service and support. Following the trials at our Leicestershire factory, it became clear that the system on offer from W H Leary was the one which best met our criteria.”

Delta Packaging breaks its own speed records with Leary !
Open a PDF version of this story

Delta print & packaging, the Belfast based folding carton producer recently installed it's third high-speed gluing system from Leary. The system replaces the standard unit supplied with the Bobst Alpina gluer. The company required a minimum running speed of 145,000 cartons per hour and following installation achieved average speeds of over 170,000 cartons per hour.

The company produces packaging for one of the world's largest convenience food retailers, manufacturing over 2.5 million fries scoops every 24 hours. It was in this area of production that Delta sought to increase productivity by moving the majority of this work onto their Bobst Alpina gluer. During initial running trials the gluer performed well but it was felt that the standard gluing system would need to be replaced in order to push speeds beyond 320 meters per minute.

Leary were asked to assist in achieving the required speeds of over 145,000 cartons per hour, Delta are existing users of Leary systems and aware of technology available. A 2-gun high-pressure gluing system with integrated On-Target glue detection was installed and within two days the company achieved running speeds of over 570 meters per minute (170,000 cartons per hour).
